In 1380, Philip the Bold (Philippe le Hardi), Duke of Burgundy, bought the stronghold of Germolles for his wife Margaret of Flanders (Marguerite de Flandre). The Duchess transformed it into a luxurious home with the help of the finest artists of the Burgundian School (Claus Sluter, Jean de Beaumetz).
Germolles is not only one of the few palatial and princely residences of that time in France but also the only country estate (demeure de plaisance) of the Dukes of Burgundy that has been preserved so extensively.

Philippe le Hardi (Philip the Bold) inherits Burgundy on the 2nd of June 1364. The region is rich and possesses a lot of castles. But it suffers too from plague crises as in many parts in Europe since 1348, and war violences with England (since the defeat of Poitiers in 1356). In 1369 Philip the Bold marries Marguerite de Flandre (Margaret of Flanders), the richest heiress in Europe in the 14th c. In 1384 Philippe le Hardi inherits Artois and Flanders at the death of his father in law Louis de Male, earl of Flanders. The name of Germolles appears in Burgundy archives in the middle of (...)

Follow the following instructions to come to château of Germolles… Enlarge the map Between Paris and Lyon, 10km far from the A6 motorway way out at Chalon-sur-Saône. The château is situated on the territory of Mellecey city. Chalon-sur-Saône Southern motorway way out : follow the direction Montchanin (N80) ; turn right in the direction to Givry. At Givry follow the direction of Mercurey (D981). The château of Germolles is situated along the road, on your left, at a distance of around 1.5km. Opening times 2010 Visits of the château are guided. The park can be enjoyed at leisure 1 January - 14 March : by appointment only 15 March - 30 April : 2 - 6 p.m. daily, except Monday (open on Monday 5 April) 1 May - 17 October : 9.45 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. and 2.00p.m. - 7.30 p.m. daily, last visit at 6.30pm. 18 October - 14 November : 2 - 6 p.m. daily, except Monday 15 November - 31 December : by appointment only.
